PRESIDENT

Franca Trubiano - University of Pennsylvania
Assisstant Professor of Architecture

Franca Trubiano is Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Registered Architect, and funded researcher with research areas in construction technology, materials, tectonic theories, integrated design, architectural ecologies, and high performance buildings.Since 2011, Franca has been an elected Member of the Board and Treasurer/Secretary of the Building Technology Educators Society (BTES) and since 2013, an invited Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Architectural Education.   

Franca is editor and co-author of the recently published Design and Construction of High Performance Homes: Building Envelopes, Renewable Energies andIntegrated Practice (Routledge Press 2012), which features 18 essays on architectural innovations in building skin technologies, energy-free architectural design principles, advances inbuilding-integrated photovoltaics, engineering principles for building controls and simulation strategies for achieving net zero, and a review of the advantages of integrated design in residential construction. It also discusses state-of-the-art case studies of homes that have successfully integrated low-energy design solutions. Franca has also published on the subject of High Performance design in the recently published Architecture and Energy (eds. Braham and Willis, Routledge Press, 2013) and the forthcoming Architecture and Uncertainty (ed. Benjamin Flowers, Ashgate Press, 2014).

Franca is a Principal Investigator and inaugural member of the Energy Efficient Building Hub, a US Department of Energy sponsored project located at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Her three year funded research is focused on the development of Integrated Design Roadmaps of use by all members of the AEC industry in the pursuit of Advanced Energy Retrofits.

In the Architecture Program at Penn Design, Franca teaches High Performance Building design studios in the graduate and post-professional Masters of Environmental Building Design Program, as well as Construction Technology seminars focused on the Matter + Energy. In her Construction Technology course she has introduced Building Information Modeling by authoring a two-volume BIM Handbook for use by students. Previously, in 2003-2004, Franca was the first McMahan Visiting Associate Professor at Clemson University and, from 2004-2009,Assistant Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology. While at Georgia Tech, she was co-recipient of a DOE/NREL Solar Decathlon Grant to design, build and operate a zero-energy house on the Mall in Washington in October 2007. As lead architecture faculty and construction project manager for Icarus Redux, she collaborated with hundreds of students, faculty and industry partners in garnering 6th position overall, 4th place in the Architecture Competition, and 3rd place in Drawings and Specifications. In 2009, student work from her studio ECO-SKINS: The Design and Construction of Low Energy High Performance Building Envelopes was awarded a COTE - Committee on the Environment (AIA) Award. And in 2005, her paper 'Material Matters: Seeking Collaborations between the building industry and innovative architectural practices The Cases of Thomas Herzog and Ove Arup' was awarded the ARCC - Architectural Research Center Consortium, Best Conference Paper Award. Her work has also been published in DETAIL, Journal of Architectural Education, SCAPES, Chora, as well as the Encyclopedia of Twentieth Century Architecture. And she has been the recipient of a number of research grants, including a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Grant (Canada) and a Fonds aux Chercheurs et Aide â la Recherche (Quebec),as well as the co-recipient of a Graham Foundation Grant.

PRESIDENT ELECT

The president-elect term is January 1, 2014 through December 31, 2014, followed by a one year term as president from January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015 and Past President for the subsequent year.  The president provides leadership that furthers the mission of the BTES. Responsibilities include presiding over BTES meetings and chairing the working group comprised of the BTES officers including the president-elect, the secretary, and the treasurer.  The president serves as the principal executive officer of the corporation and facilitates communications between the officers and the board of directors.

Dana Gulling - North Carolina State University
Assistant Professor

Dana K. Gulling is an Assistant Professor in North Carolina State University. Dana has over 8 years of experience in the area of building technology, including materials and methods, building assemblies, architectural structures, design studios, and seminar courses. She has taught at a number of institutions, including the University of New Mexico and Savannah College of Art and Design. Dana’s research and teaching broadly examine the growing importance of design integration of building services, systems, and details in architecture design. Specifically, her research focus on repetitive manufacturing processes and how architects have been customizing these processes for their designs.

Dana has been an active member in the BTES since its inception. In 2006, Dana presented at the first BTES Symposium, held at the University of Maryland. There she volunteered to be on the BTES Organization Committee. She helped establish the BTES as a 501(c)3, and was the acting secretary until the first election was held.  In 2009, she and Diane Armpriest co-organized the 2nd BTES Conference at the University of New Mexico. She has found the BTES to be a great resource for her teaching and her research. She is interested in opportunities to grow the membership, increase member promotion and award opportunities, and to support the BTES conferences and special paper sessions at other venues.

Dana holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame with a concentration in structural engineering. She holds architecture registration in Connecticut and North Carolina, and is NCARB certified.

SECRETARY

The secretary term is January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2015. The secretary is responsible for arranging board conference calls, minute taking and maintenance of the member list.

Marci S. Uihlein - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Assistant Professor of Architecture

Marci S. Uihlein is a licensed professional engineer with a graduate degree in architecture.  She has worked on projects for both the private sector and academic institutions with Arup at their San Francisco and Los Angeles offices. She first became involved in academia while working as a visiting lecturer for the School of Architecture with the Study Abroad Program in Versailles, France from 2007-2010.  For the 2008-2009 academic year, she was the recipient of the Hilfinger Faculty Fellowship, awarded to faculty members who are able bridge practice and education along with architecture and structure. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, teaching classes in building structures for architecture students. In 2013, she was awarded the Building Technology Educators’ Society (BTES) Emerging Faculty Award.  Her research areas include the integration of structure in architectural projects, the structural engineering profession, and examining the professional relationship between architects and engineers.

 

 

TREASURER

The treasurer term is January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2015. The treasurer is responsible for all financial issues; posting dues calls, banking, coordinating with conference chairs, maintenance of the member list.

Bob Dermody

Robert J. Dermody AIA, NCARB - Roger Wiliams University
Associate Professor

Robert J. Dermody is an associate professor in the School of Architecture, Art and Historic Preservation at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI.  His background bridges the realms of architecture and engineering.   Bob has a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and a Master of Architecture degree with a concentration in Structures from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.   He teaches both design studios and technical courses at the undergraduate level.  His primary interest is in teaching structures to architecture students.  Courses taught include: structural design, construction materials and methods, and design studios.  Mr. Dermody also has keen interest in bridges.  Bob has traveled extensively to photograph the bridges of Robert Maillart in Switzerland, and the early iron bridges of the industrial revolution in Wales.  He is a founding member of the Building Technology Educators Society, and is a registered architect in Massachusetts.

DIRECTORS

Board members participate in the conference calls, assist with running the BTES at ACSA sessions, assist with peer review of papers for both the BTES at ACSA and BTES conferences. There will likely be some involvement with the new Journal as it progresses in development.

Loraine Fowlow - University of Calgary
Associate Professor

With a background in both structural engineering and architecture, I am an educator with almost twenty years’ experience working across an array of educational realms. I am first and foremost a teacher of structures and design studio, with a long held and practiced commitment to the integration of the technical with the aesthetic. My experience outside the classroom includes participation at the Board level in several organizations, including the ACSA, and the Steel Structures Education Foundation, the educational arm of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction. I have also served on the Editorial Board of the University of Calgary Press for nine years, reviewing and developing numerous manuscripts across a wide range of disciplines.

My experience in architectural accreditation includes serving on seven Visiting Teams for both NAAB and CACB, two of which I was Chair. These Visits have afforded me the experience of a great diversity of programs across many regions of the U.S. (including Puerto Rico) and Canada, and provided insights into the varied approaches to both architectural accreditation and education.

The highlight of my experience as an architectural educator to date, though, has been the pleasure of guiding two teams to top ten finishes in the Solar Decathlon, and participating in the personal and professional development of these young architects and engineers.

My motivation and interest in this position with the BTES is simple: I am dedicated to the betterment of the architectural profession, and the educational realms that prepare young architects for practice. I hope to have the opportunity to work with BTES on furthering the goals of its membership.

Deborah Oakley, R.A., P.E. - University of Nevada at Las Vegas
Associate Professor

The BTES began formally as a direct result of the highly successful 2006 Building Technology Educators’ Symposium, which I co-organized with Ryan Smith. One of the visions we had for that event was to rekindle discussions about forming an organization that emerged from a conference held on creative structures teaching ten years earlier in Milwaukee. The enthusiasm of that meeting waned in the intervening years, and nothing formally emerged. We decided it was time to either “put up or shut up.” If we wanted an organization, we needed to make it happen. At the closing group meeting it was strongly the opinion of those present that a formal entity made sense, and so a committee was formed to begin the process of organizing what is today the BTES.

Now, more than six years later, it is extremely heartening to see that every single objective we laid out at the 2006 event has come to pass. The BTES is an official non-profit 501(c)(3) organization; we have held two subsequent conferences with peer-reviewed papers and a third coming up next year; we have had a dedicated session at the annual ACSA meetings every year and are now holding peer-reviewed paper sessions therein; we have begun to offer an emerging teacher award at the conferences; and trust of the former Connector newsletter has been given over to us by Edward Allen. Our membership has continued to grow and the number of new faces is wonderful to see. We have also been conducting discussions with our sister organization, the Society of Building Science Educators, regarding the possibility of establishing a formal peer-reviewed journal for the research of architectural technology and its associated scholarship of teaching, neither of which currently have a dedicated outlet. Clearly the future looks bright indeed!

As a founding member of the BTES and member of the initial organizing committee, I have had a continuous, vested interest in the maintenance and growth of the organization, including past presidency for 2009-10.  I believe it is important for the ongoing development of the BTES that there be some continuity of “brain trust” at some level. As we move forward, new members are taking on leadership roles, as it should be. I am seeking your vote for a board position in order to maintain that thread of continuity and fill an advisory role to those newly elected to steer the organization into its next phase of growth. I thank you for the trust you have given me in the past, and you can be certain of my dedication to the future of the BTES as it matures.

Erin Carraher - University of Utah
Assistant Professor of Architecture

I am a licensed architect and an Assistant Professor at the University of Utah's School of Architecture where I teach first-year design studios as well as undergraduate and graduate seminars on architectural communications and digital technologies. I am the co-director of the School's digital fabrication lab and am a senior researcher at Integrated Technology in Architecture Center (ITAC) where I work on ways to translate emerging practices into the design development and project delivery processes. I previously practiced architecture in New York City and taught at Virginia Tech's School of Architecture + Design where I was recognized with the University's Xcaliber Award Certificate of Excellence for Contributions to Technology-Enriched Teaching and Learning. I joined the faculty at Utah in Fall 2011 and was named Faculty of the Year by the College of Architecture + Planning in 2013. I am currently a co-PI on a national AIA continuing education project to develop resources for architects on their role as leaders in collaborative architectural practice in light of emerging forms of project delivery and served as co-chair of the Forefront: Architects as Collaborative Leaders conference held in Salt Lake City in October 2013 that addressed this issue.

As a new assistant professor, I've come to understand the importance of finding peer groups and mentors aligned with one's values and interests. I believe I've found that cohort in the BTES community. I have had great experiences presenting at the BTES ACSA session in San Francisco and at the conference in Rhode Island last year and found the conversations exciting and inspiring. I would like to become more involved in the organization by serving as a board member; I believe I can bring the perspective of new faculty members to the discussion and hope to further develop the mentoring practices already in place. I have experience organizing national conferences, developing proceedings, and working on journals - all of which I feel would allow for me to contribute to the organization's goals and objectives to help advance the dialog regarding the teaching technology of building design and construction within the BTES community and beyond. 

 

Simi Hoque - University of Massachusetts-Amherst
Assistant Professor, Building Systems

Here’s why: One of the core missions of BTES is to enhance the status of our disciplines to the profession at large. BT has always occupied an auxiliary seat to design, and we can no longer afford to remain back seat passengers. BT is an integral part of architectural research, architectural education, and architectural design. As a group, we have tremendous expertise in a wide range of activities. We can promote research activities in architecture through more BTES special topics conference sessions as well as the proposed BTES journal. We can transform the architectural curriculum by inventing new modalities of teaching that integrates BT in design through frameworks of sustainability. We can facilitate student learning by running BTES sponsored, student-run symposiums about BT special topics. As director, I would like to continue stewarding BTES as it acquires new members and achieves greater visibility in the profession and academia.

A little about me: I get things done. I am decisive and very efficient (I have three children under the age of 4 after all J). I am also very good at organizing large unwieldy groups of faculty and remaining sanguine through the process. I was trained as an architect and an engineer at UC-Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon. In the past decade I have worked as a mechanical systems engineer, educator, and architectural designer focusing almost exclusively on the analysis and optimization of large commercial and residential buildings in the US. Last summer I attended the BTES conference in Rhode Island where I presented a paper and also was part of the research panel discussion. During the two days I spent interacting with faculty about their research and teaching, I learned about and shared the joys and frustrations of being the ‘quant’ in a department of designers. BTES is a friendly and close-knit organization that enables lasting connections to evolve. I hope that as an officer, I can create and engender opportunities for faculty seeking mentors and collaborators even beyond the biennial conference. I am also very interested in promoting the research arm of BTES to share RFPs, research activities, example TP packages, and proposal writing samples. This would be to help to foster collaborations for the research and creative activities that are already ongoing among BTES members. It would also leverage the proposed BTES journal.

 

Rob Whitehead - Iowa State University
Assistant Professor of Architecture

Rob Whitehead, AIA, LEED AP is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Iowa State University where he teaches structural design, studio, and design-build courses. His research is focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning in building technologies and the design and construction of innovative structures developed under constrained conditions. He was awarded with an NCARB grant for the Integration of Practice in Academy in 2009, the inaugural BTES Emerging Faculty Award in 2011, and most recently, an ACSA Creative Achievement Award in 2013 for his Structural Technology in Practice course. He is one of the authors of the Second Edition of the Design Tech building technology textbook and he currently serves on the National Council of Building Sciences Off-site Construction Council.
